Building a community that grows together and a global family that supports each other is one of the most rewarding aspects of The Fountainhead Residency and Studios. Here are some amazing stories of connectivity that began with The Fountainhead.
Paint, Score, Museum- While at the Fountainhead Residency Dannielle Tegeder met Miami-based artist/composer Matthew Evan Taylor. After going back to NYC, Dannielle commissioned Matthew to produce a score for her exhibition at the Montclair Art Museum. This connection led to museum show for a Miami-based artist and a long term collaboration which we expect you'll see more from here in Miami.
First Love- In 2012, we brought our first Cuban artist to The Fountainhead Residency, Sandra Ramos. While she was here she produced a work that we showed at Skip Van Cell's alternative space Gilt and Shame. That work went on to show in the Havana Biennial and the Venice Biennial. But the real story is more important then that of the art. While here, she reconnected with her first love. They were separated at age 18 when his family immigrated to the US. Fast forward, Sandra had a studio at The Fountainhead Studios for two years and lives happily between Cuba and Miami with her soulmate, never to be separated again.
Museum Quality Rap- Fountainhead Residency artist Jacolby Satterwhite came up with an idea and made it happen in a grand way. Jacolby had met the team from Miami based Borscht Film in the past but it wasn't until they were able to spend time together that they realized their synergies and decided to work together. The result of their collaboration? A live performance with Miami-based rapper Trina on stage along the water at PAMM. It flooded social media outlets and brought a new audience to the PAMM.
Berlin in Brazil- We hosted Brazil based artist, Henrique Oliviera, during his exhibition with Miami based gallery Alejandra von Hartz. One of his friends Camila, a gallery owner in Brazil, stopped by to say "Hi". While she was there, she visited with one of Henrique's residency mates, John von Bergen of Berlin. The three stayed in touch and a little over a year after their residency together, Galeria Pilar invited John von Bergen for a solo show.
Locust Projects Collab- While at the Fountainhead Residency, Alexandra Hopf (Berlin) and Siebren Versteeg (NYC) developed a friendship and mutual admiration for their work. After meeting with Fountainhead Studio artist Marcos Valella, Miami-based artist Odalis Valdivieso and Berlin-based artist Gabriel Vormstein, they all collaborated on 'Grid’s World' exhibited at Locust Projects.
What About a Tattoo?- We met London based artist Sam Winston, while visiting with Miami collectors Ruth and Marvin Sackner. We were drawn to him and his work and invited him to be a part of The Fountainhead Residency. While he was with us he developed a close bond with O,Miami founder Scott Cunningham. To date they have done a number of collaborations, including one that is permanent but you'll have to ask Scott for the details.
New Discoveries in a Familiar Place- Fountainhead Studios artist Andrea Nhuch has been traveling to South Africa for years to visit her husband's family. Because of the long travel time, they stay for an extended period. Thanks to the artists and curators she's meet through The Residency she has been able to gain a new perspective on the country and its people. She now has an extended art family that she can call her own.
Inspiring Young Talent- Fountainhead Haus artist Cristina Lei Rodriguez has nurtured many young talents. While teaching at New World School of the Arts she brought her students to The Fountainhead Studios to meet the visiting residents and share experiences about working as a professional artist.
The Fountainhead Residency and Studios have taught and/or mentored young artists with New World School of the Arts, Miami Arts Charter, FIU and YoungArts. Over 50 artists from The Fountainhead have gone on to show in Miami based museums, galleries and alternative spaces.
